Comment: The five elements of Vedic astrology, if you were wondering, are Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Ether (Space). Ether is consciousness, which is perceived through sound. (So I got this tree in the forest & it's falling, see, and ....)

After 72 pages of introduction (chapter 1), we get to the heart of the book: Each ascendant, considered in detail. These delineations are psychological in nature, ie, suited for an American audience. An example will suffice. From the Aries ascendant:

The exaltation point of the Sun in the 1st house reveals that their creative intelligence and soul's quest for self-knowledge is being developed in this lifetime. Their mind and approach to life is very sharp, active & fiery and they will place much importance into that mind and approach. Their self-confidence & projection are largely based on the ability to understand themselves, or a problem, intellectually. Arians will approach creative endeavors, learning & children with zeal. The exaltation placement of the Sun also shows a self-absorbed quality, as they are learning to trust their own instincts. (pg. 75)
In addition to delineations of the exaltation & debilitation houses for each of the planets, Sun through Saturn, are delineations for the houses each planet rules, for each ascendant sign. So, for Aries, in addition to Sun exalted in the first, we also have its rulership of the 5th & its debilitation in the 7th. For the Moon in an Aries map, its rulership of the 4th, exaltation & fall in 2 & 8, etc.

FUNDAMENTALS OF MEDICAL ASTROLOGY - Dr. Tapomay Ghoshhajra, $6.00

Contents:

Dedication
Preface

1. Introduction
2. Details of different diseases
3. Fevers, infections, insanity, impotence, insomnia, etc.
4. Mumps, measles, pregnancy, plague, etc.
5. Pox, urinary & venereal diseases, whooping cough, etc.

Comment: Brief descriptions, in alphabetical order, divided among five chapters.

After brief introductory remarks in chapter 1, chapter 2 begins a survey of the symptoms & astrological causes of diseases, in alphabetical order, starting with AIDS, which the author believes is caused by homosexuality and/or oral sex. The underlying astrological cause is an "ill fated" combination of Rahu, Venus, Mars & Saturn. The houses & lords involved are 6, 8 & 12. In this chapter he goes on to cover asthma, appendicitis, anemia, abscess, blood pressure, to eye & ear diseases. Chapter 3 continues with fevers, hydrophobia (rabies), insanity, impotence, insomnia and jaundice, ending with leprosy. Dr. Goshhajra saw a lot of lepers in his practice, as he has the most astrological details of this disease I have ever seen. Chapter four starts with mumps & includes measles, moles, pregnancy, plague, paralysis, etc. Chapter five includes pox, tetanus, ulcers, urinary & veneral diseases. Throughout the book, gem remedies are often suggested.

The book is too small to be a comprehensive guide, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Jyotish Vimal, 48 pages. First edition 1989, this is the second edition from 1996. Not well printed, pages are uneven & some parts are faint.

SIGNIFICANT MUNDANE EVENTS: Through transit navamsa - S.S. Gola, $11.00
Contents: Preface to the first edition; 1. Planets; 2. Houses; 3. Kurma chakra; 4. Mars Saturn conjunction; 5. Saturn Rahu conjunction; 6. Saturn influence on Sun; 7. Retrograde planets; 8. Oath ceremony charts; 9. Timing of events through transit navamsa; 10. Will Congress return to power again?

Comment: A text on mundane astrology, and not lifted from Raphael. Of interest, the Kurma Chakra chart, where Varaha Mihira divides India into nine parts, and for each, 3 nakshatras are assigned. It can be applied to any country: Divide the country into nine sections (like a tic-tac-toe board). Start in the center, then go east, then south, west, north & back to the east, assigning the proper nakshatras. Omitting one or other section (the center?), seven planets & Rahu can be assigned as well. In transit navamsa, an event triggers when a planet: retrogrades, becomes direct, goes combust, rises from combustion, changes sign & then "the malefic planet closely influences the benefic/malefic planet(s) in transit." (pg. 65) Which was not very clear to me. In chapter 10, "Congress" is the name of the principle political party in India. With many example charts, all for events in India.

Gola Publishers, 116 pages.

HORA MAKARAND - Gunakar, translated by H.K. Thite, $16.00
Contents: Introduction; Preface; 1. Conventional terms; 2. Traits & predominance of planets; 3. Non-human births; 4. On conception, etc.; 5. Birth conditions; 6. Factors of span of life; 7. Cancellation of yogas of short life created by moon; 8. Cancellation of evil effects caused by all planets; 9. Span of life;

10. Ruling & sub-ruling periods; 11. Sub-ruling periods; 12. Ashtakavarga; 13. Nature of profession; 14. Rajayogas; 15. Nabhasa yogas; 16. Voshi, Veshi & Ubhayachari yogas; 17. Lunar yogas; 18. Combination of planets & ascetic yogas; 19. Traits of asterisms (nakshatras);

20. Moon in different signs & their results; 21. Planets in signs & results; 22. Effects of the rays of planets; 23. Aspects of moon; 24. Results of planets in various houses; 25. Planets in vargas; 26. Karakas; 27. Anishta or misfortune; 28. Female horoscopy; 29. Death;

30. Results of decanate; 31. Unknown (lost) horoscopes; 32. Appendix: Additional information about decanates.

Comment: From the introduction: "Hora Makarand" seems to have been penned by the author with a view to synthesizing views of various earlier writers ranging from Parasara to Satyacharya & Varahamihira. Needless to mention that in the historical chronology of writers on astrology, Varahamihira is most authentic & presents both a platform for further research & allows modifications of interpretations to suit the contemporary terms. And this text should be seen as another further step in this direction initiated by Varahamihira. The text does present some very original & useful views for use of divisional charts, ashtakavarga, and span of life besides offering rare clues on natal, horary and transit horoscopes... (pg. v) Includes original Sanskrit slokas, as well as commentary by the translator.

NAKSHATRAS: The lunar mansions of Vedic astrology - Dennis Harness, $15.95
Contents: Foreword by Chakrapani Ullal, Acknowledgements; Introduction by David Frawley; Preface

Section 1: Nakshatras: 1. Ashwini; 2. Bharani; 3. Krittika; 4. Rohini; 5. Mrigashira; 6. Ardra; 7. Punarvasu; 8. Pushya; 9. Ashlesha; 10. Magha; 11. Purva Phalguni; 12. Uttara Phalguni; 13. Hasta; 14. Chitra; 15. Swati; 16. Vishakha; 17. Anuradha; 18. Jyeshtha; 19. Mula; 20. Purva Ashadha; 21. Uttara Ashadha; 22. Shravana; 23. Dhanishtha; 24. Shatabhisha; 25. Purva Bhadrapada; 26. Uttara Bhadrapada, 27. Revati.

Section 2: Choosing an auspicious lunar nakshatra.

Section 3: Relationship compatibility & the nakshatras; Yoni Kuta table; Nakshatra coompatibility table.

Section 4: Appendices: A. Planets at a glance; B. Houses at a glance; C. Ascendants at a glance; D. Vedic resource guide. Sanskrit glossary; Bibliography; Index.

Comment: Each nakshatra gets three pages of text. Of that, one page is the nakshatra "at a glance", a table with keywords for the ascendant, moon & sun, with a short list of famous people with the asterism in their chart. The other two pages explore the mythology & general sense of the nakshatra. Strangely, Harness's view of nakshatras seems colored by the signs of the zodiac in which they are found. Except for section 3, this is essentially an elementary book. Shubhakaran, and the priceless Light on Life both do better with this subject.

Lotus Press, 183 pages.

THE DIVINE PATH OF PREDICTION: A summer in the life of a Vedic astrologer - Tom Hopke aka Nalini, $22.00
Contents: Foreword; Preface; Introduction; 1. The wheel goes 'round; 2. Focus on the ascendant; 3. Get your facts straight; 4. The predictive path; 5. The yearly chart; 6. Transits; 7. Political astrology; 8. Correct & incorrect predictions; 9. Memorable quotes; 10. Questions on health; 11. Compatibility; 12. Remedial measures; 13. Q & A; 14. Spirituality & Vedic astrology; 15. L.A. & Bhriguji; 16. Conclusion; Testimonials.

Comment: Published in 2001, here is a quote from page 72, part of a prediction of George W. Bush's Presidency: Cancer, the feminine householder sign, rises, with Venus in his lagna. He has a sensitive, likeable nature & will use strength for peacemaking. There will be less war in the world than in the past eight years of the Clinton Presidency (Clinton has a malefic Mars in his lagna).

Nalini got himself a fancy Bhrigu reading. Sage Bhrigu spoke to him directly. What Bhrigu said to Tom, from the back of this book: You have my blessings to compose the new book. Learn more and more about astrology & use your knowledge wisely. The true path leads to liberation & to the Lotus Feet of the Lord; this is certain.

By turns autobiographical & an introduction of sorts to Vedic astrology. There is, I regret to report, a school of American Vedic astrologers who spend their time congratulating & defending themselves. I rather wish they would write the great books they always promise, instead of the trivial ones they actually do.

I See Publishing, 157 pages.

Comment: The author was a student of M.C. Jain, this book was first published in 1976. This is a survey of many ideas & observations. At the time the book was published, Inglis was living in Toledo, Ohio. I do not know why an otherwise fine book was not published by an American publisher.

KALAPRAKASIKA - N.P. Subramania Iyer, $45.00

41. The annual horoscope; 42. Interpretation of dreams; 43. Sreejayanthi; 44. The Krithika festival; 45. Ekadhasi; Appendix (glossary & astrological primer); pages in Devanagari.

Comment: On the title page, the subtitles read, The standard book on the Election (Mahoortha) system. With original text in Devangari & English translation to which are added an introduction to the study of astrology, explanatory notes, appendix, illustrations. I had not thought of organizing a book on Electional astrology chronologically, eg, from birth to death, but it has appeal. Many of the elected events are, in fact, for religious ritual & ceremony, which is another interesting way to think about elections.

The book is hardcover & nicely bound, faint in places (especially the table of contents), though readable. This is presumably some old book which Iyer translated. His introduction is dated 1917 & sounds very European.

Asian Educational Services, 250 pages in English, an unknown number in Devanagari in the back.

NEW TECHNIQUES OF PREDICTION - H.R. Seshadri Iyer, $60.00/set

Contents of book 1:
1. Definition & nomenclatures; 2. Karakatwas; 3. Preliminaries to cast birth chart; 4. Shadbala; 5. Yogadhyaya; 6. Female horoscopy; 7. Bhava Phalams. 129 pages, single-sided.

Contents of book 2:
1. Thithi & yoga; 2. Novel method of dasha bhukti reading; 3. Phala Kundali or division charts; 4. Dasha bhukti (classical); 5. Gochara (transit of planet); 6. Varshapravesh (solar birthday map); 7. Daily & hourly readings & misconceptions & blind beliefs. Appendices: 1. Ready-made tables to erect divisional charts (with instructions); 2. 40 illustrative horoscopes, given in tabular form, restricted to the relevant divisionals. 158 pages, single-sided.

Contents of book 3:
1. New techniques of prediction part 3; 2. Starry positions of planets worked from ephemeres; 3. Alphabetology or Akshara Shastra; 4. Theories of spotting winners; 5. Order of preference of tests A to D; 6. Winner by navamsha method; 7. Dead certs. 79 pages, single-sided.

Comment:
This appears to be an original work, written in English sometime after 1970 (my best guess). Judging by the charts in book 2, by then Iyer had been in practice for many years. The author examines tradition & then gives the results of his own experience, with many unique observations. Book 3 is an extended treatise on how to win at horse racing, which might be the secret reason for popularity of this set.

No publisher given.

ASTROLOGY & THE SOLAR COMPUTER - Pravin Jagad, $12.00

Contents:

Forward
Introduction

Astrology made easy
The theory of longevity
Relation between man & planets
The theory of creation
The theory of creation of solar system
Sign exaltation test
The concept of enmity amongst planets
An evidence for verification
Halving radius theory of creation
Time of one solar revolution
Stages of contraction of solar cloud
Some more examples of longevity

Comment: The book is divided into two sections. From the back cover:

1. The theory of longevity: This theory is a kind of new discovery in the sphere of astrology. It outlines a new method of determining the length of life from the natal horoscope. It reveals Nature's mechanism & shows how it operates. It clearly establishes a relationship between Man & the Planets and also proves that zodiac is not an imaginary concept but it is real.

2. The theory of creation of solar system: The Rule of 10, 8, 4, 2 or we can say the Rule of house exaltation of the Ruler of the Ascendant as discovered in the Theory of Longevity has been used in constructing the Theory of Creation of Solar System. The basic principles of astrology are like axioms or postulates. The Theory of Creation of Solar System shows that the origin of these basic principles lies in the process of Creation of Solar System.
