The Tarot of the Southwest Sacred Tribes Deck

Measurements: 2.8 x 4.6 inches, or 70 x 117 mm.

Back of card: Almost like a Navajo rug. From the edge of the card, going towards the center: After a white border, there is a zig-zag edging (black/dull red). Inside that a vine of green leaves encircles the center, which is again rug-like: a zig-zag border (red-blue) enclosing four diamonds & two owls. Can be inverted.

Booklet included: Yes, 16 pages, 2.35 x 3.9 inches, or 60 x 100 mm.

"The Tarot of the Southwest Sacred Tribes is a study in the tribes of the Southwest and their relationship to the Earth, as it is reflected in their art. Although the tribes predominately reflected in this deck are the Apache, Pueblo and Navajo nations, the intent is to reflect the huge diversity of customs & cultures that enrich the American southwest....

"The deck is comprised of 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana cards, with the Suit of Swords using motifs of the Apache; the Suit of Wands corresponding to the Pueblo; the Suit of Cups reflecting the art of the Rio Grande Pueblo [eg, New Mexico]; and the Suit of Coins arising from the Navajo Nations."

Court cards are King, Queen, Knight & Page, which we presume is by choice. An alternative would be Chief, Squaw, Brave, etc. Some cards are clearly based on Rider-Waite, others are not. Unlike some Native American tarots, there are no references to Europeans, nor their impact on Native life. Someone once asked me for tarot decks with no nudes. I'm pleased to say there are no nudes in this deck.
