Comment: In the Foreword, K.S. Charak writes,

In today's world of computers, students often shirk from making lengthy calculations. However, many of the computer softwares give inaccurate results which need to be manually verified. Besides, almost all of them provide the planetary strength as a sum total of the six constituents of Shadbala and not of the individual constituents separately. For example, an idea of a planet's Sthanabala, Kaalabala or Cheshtabala, etc., is also of importance in predictive astrology besides the cumulative value of Shadbala. It is this aspect of the work under consideration that Krishna Kumar's contribution to astrology becomes specially commendable. Several works on the method of reckoning the Shadbala there have been, but none has so far dealt with the predictive utility of Shadbala as a whole, or of its constituents separately. This is the author's most significant contribution to the world of Vedic astrology. The book also includes chapters on the Bhavabala, or the strength of the houses, as well as Ishtabala/Kashtabala of planets. One chapter has been devoted to the use of Shadbala in assessing the dasha results of the planets. At the end, the author illustrates the principles of Shadbala by using them on actual example charts. The body of the text contains numerous references to astrological classics. (pgs. iv-v)

On page 19, point 1.23 says there are a total of 20 divisional charts, of which only six are in general use: Rasi, Hora, Dreshkan, Navamansh, Dwadasansh & Trinshansh. To this, the Saptmansh chart is commonly added. Point 1.24: The addition of the Dashansh, Shodashansh & Shastyansh to the previous seven give the Dashvarg, or 10 divisional charts. Kumar then gives an additional six divisional charts, for a total of 16 of the 20 possible. Each of the 16 are weighted, by comparison to each of the others.

Epilogue.

Comment: This appears to be a rewrite of a Alpha publication (same author, same title), as the contents are entirely new. This edition has about 80 pages less than the first, but the first edition had only five chapters, while this has eight, plus an epilogue.

Rick Houck was the local expert in this area, pity his own longevity wasn't so hot. R.I.P.

On the back of both editions, it says:

The correct determination of longevity is highly complex & has belied most of the astrologers. Yet, it is very important & is the most sought after. "Knowledge of longevity is difficult even for the gods" said sage Parashar.
The blurb on the back of this book continues with:
The time span between birth & death of a native is called his longevity. Longevity & death are not the same but are closely related. However it is not yet clear what death is.

Our scriptures have at various places equated death with different types of Mrityu Tulya agonies which are different from physical death. Again the destiny of each one of us is interlinked with our close kith & kin andour relationship with them is pre-determined, predestined & irrevocable. Death is severing of final link of a native with them. Hence a native's death must get corroborated / confirmed in the horoscopes of his close relations.

An attempt is made in this book to address all such issues. The book is a study of about 225 natives who had lived & died in different countries at different time, at different age and of different causes, applying known tools of astrology. The book is an attempt to help clear some mist & enable to have a better judgement of longevity.

Comment:

From the back cover:

The vargas are the unique feature of Vedic astrology which has given it a definite edge over any other system in vogue. The primary aim of studying a Varga is two-fold - to study a particular aspect of human life pertaining to a specific house and to find out the true strength of the planets related with the house. A horoscope takes into account linear time & vertical declinations of the planets. Every division of zodiac has a corresponding division of time. Hence a Varga gives projections representing possibilities which might occur in different time frames. Each chart gives a microscopic view of a particular facet of life seen in the light of Dasha sequence.

There are many tools available to assess the true strength of a planet. One set of rules rely on PAC of planets, their awasthas & yogas formed by them. The other, Nadi system, studies the effects of lords of sign, Nakshatra & Sub under which a planet is placed. At times these influences change the characteristics of a planet completely. In this book an attempt is made to unite the two systems to get the true strength of planets. In order to understand a planet & its significations in a better way, a comparative study of planets in birth & divisional charts has also been made.

ASTRO REMEDIES, A VEDIC APPROACH - Lt. Col. Raj Kumar, $26.00

Foreword
Preface
List of horoscopes

2. Indications of weak / afflicted planets
3. Colour therapy
4. Gem therapy
5. Sound therapy & mantra
6. Compendium of mantras
7. Tantra
8. Yantra
9. Rudraksh
10. Bath, fast & charity
11. Curses of previous births & their propitiation
12. Lal Kitab & remedies

Comment:

From the back cover:

In a horoscope, destiny / luck is indicated by the 9th house and 3rd house represents Purshartha, the free will or Kiryaman Karma, done with a strong will & belief to smoothen the path of destiny. The life or path of human development is a story of constant struggle between the destiny & Purshartha / remedies, with dices heavily decked against the later. The success of the remedies rests upon the strong will, belief & faith one has in the remedy and one's total unconditional surrender before the relevant deity. There are various modes of remedies, one can chose from depending on his faith / belief, like colour therapy & gems, mantra, yantra, tantra & Rudraksh, bath, fast & charity, propitiation of curses & age old folk treatments of Lal Kitab. All these have been covered in this book as an aide-memoire to a native in his fight against misfortune.
Chapter 2, Indications of weak / afflicted planets, has some nice general (non-astrological) descriptions of weak planets. The mantras given in chapter 6 are in Hindi or Sanskrit (I cannot tell which). A few of them are translated/transcribed in English ( O! Agni! Impart a life span of 100 years you are symbol of ghee which nurtures & sustains your organs, etc.). (I know of no reason why mantras cannot be recited in English.) The sounds of some Hindi/Sanskrit mantras are transcribed, for those who want to attempt pronunciation.

Chapter 7, on tantra, in addition to magical spells, also includes folk remedies, such as this one, for jaundice: Process pills from fresh garlic and Chirayata (a bitter herb equal to size of peas). If patient takes two such pill in the morning, he will be cured.

An interesting book.

Glossary; Tables for divisional charts, dasa tables)

Comment: In the Preface, the author (self-published) claims 55 years of astrological experience, including writing for annual guidance on Zodiac signs, in Diamond Rashiphal. Its publication during 28 years inspired me to write astrological analysis on over 22,000 horoscopes, due to regularly increading demand by my aspirants. So, an Institute was formed in 1965 and got registered in 1969 to regulate further studies in Astral-Sciences. (pg. xix)

The opening sections are more introductory, while the second half is more traditional Vedic horoscope analysis, of the natal chart, divisional chart, or horary chart.
