Vedic Books From:

The American Federation of Astrologers

In the late 1980's, Bob Cooper, head of the AFA, expanded into Vedic books. He found himself a supplier, he bought a large amount of stock. But for unknown reasons, his project failed. He found few buyers. One reason might have been the rather high prices he charged, presumably the result of the high prices he paid. But, nothing if not dogged, he carried the stock in his annual catalog. Year after year. At various times he got more stock.

I asked, more than once, if they would sell these books to me at reduced prices, but they refused. I declined to buy at the AFA's inflated prices, as I would only end up with the same high prices & the same few sales. (Example: The AFA's Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, the two volume translation by Santhanam, sold for $110.00. The superior 2 volume Sharma translation is $60.00.) This was the situation up to Mr. Cooper's retirement in Spring of 2007.

Since then the AFA has been under new management. They have been digging out from 35-ish years of Cooper, if only to assert their own identities, which is their right. The money that Cooper spent for Vedic stock is not money that they have to justify. Instead, they are cleaning house. They were eager to give me this stock, to see what I could do with it.

And I am happy to present these books to you. As one would expect, the books are dated. Some are earlier editions of books I've stocked for a long time, or books that are scuffed & cannot be sold as new. Some of the others have gone out of print & these are the last remaining copies.

When stock is exhausted, these books will be deleted from this site. Until then, enjoy!

Dave

Comment: This book was originally published in 1921 & looks to be a comprehensive survey of the world's royal houses as of that date, with particular emphasis on Indian royalty. Of note, the author's own horoscope is given twice, once on pgs. 90-92, where he is known as B. Suryanarain Row & the planets are given in their English names, and again on pgs 109-110, where his name is given as Bangalore Suryanarain Rao, and where the same chart is printed, using Hindi names for the planets.

On pgs. 101-103 is the horoscope of Jesus Christ, for December 25, 7 BC, data as found in the 1937 American Journal of Astrology, as supplied by Cyril Fagan. As this was the same year in which B.S. Rao died, we may assign the 1937 edition - of which this is a copy - to the work of his son, B.S. Chandran. Chandran is presumably B.V. Raman's father or uncle. Does anybody know?

The Astrological Office, 118 pages. First printed 1921, this copy from the mid 1980's.

RISKS & TRICKS IN ASTROLOGICAL PREDICTIONS - K.N. Rao, $7.00

Contents:
Dedication; Acknowledgements; Introduction;

1. Clearly Visible Predictions: With experience astrologers begin to see at a glance the problem visible at the time of consultation. No short-cut should be adopted, but what is so clearly visible cannot be ignored;

2. Astrology for an artistic family: What are called Samskaras, for which there is no word in English, of a family where religion & art get fused into a family tradition can be seen in some families in India & in other countries. If the family horoscopes are seen individually & collectively, it yields a wealth of information & material for fine astrological research;

3. Risky predictions: No experienced astrologer can afford not to take risks. It is a risk sometimes with a less tried technique among so many rich ones in Hindu astrology or sometimes a prediction in an area where he has no rich experience. Yet such a risk must be taken for astrological self-development;

4. Interrelated destinies: It is the most complex, most baffling & most useful area in Hindu astrology where divisional horoscopes should be made use of to give helpful predictions to people who have no horoscopes of their own but have of their spouses, children or parents.

Comment: These are articles the author wrote for the late R. Santhanam's Times of Astrology in the 1980's. Rao's notes under the chapter headings are illuminating.

Vani Graphics, 119 pages. Printed: 2002. This book is new, except for a damaged cover.

A TEXTBOOK OF VARSHAPHALA - K.S. Charak, $12.00

Contents:
Preface to the 2nd edition; Preface to the 1st edition; List of illustrations;
1. Introduction; 2. General considerations; 3. Casting the annual chart; 4. The Muntha; 5. The Dasha system; 6. Of planetary strengths; 7. The lord of the year; 8. The tri-pataki chakra; 9. Planets in different houses; 10. The yogas; The sahams; 11. Analysis of different houses; 12. The maasa pravesha; 13. Summary; Index.

Comment: Varshaphala, or Tajika, is the Vedic equivalent of the solar return, accomplished by use of 16 Tajika yogas. In Tajika, aspects, friends & enemies, masculine/feminine planets all differ from the classic norms of Parasara. Unique are the annual lords, the 16 yogas, certain sensitive points (sahams), the Muntha & the Tri-Pakaki Map. One of the best books of its kind in English, with many case studies.

UMA Publications, 213 pages. Printed: 1993.

ASTROLOGY & THE SOLAR COMPUTER - Pravin Jagad, $10.00

Contents:

Forward
Introduction

Astrology made easy
The theory of longevity
Relation between man & planets
The theory of creation
The theory of creation of solar system
Sign exaltation test
The concept of enmity amongst planets
An evidence for verification
Halving radius theory of creation
Time of one solar revolution
Stages of contraction of solar cloud
Some more examples of longevity

Comment: The book is divided into two sections. From the back cover:

1. The theory of longevity: This theory is a kind of new discovery in the sphere of astrology. It outlines a new method of determining the length of life from the natal horoscope. It reveals Nature's mechanism & shows how it operates. It clearly establishes a relationship between Man & the Planets and also proves that zodiac is not an imaginary concept but it is real.

2. The theory of creation of solar system: The Rule of 10, 8, 4, 2 or we can say the Rule of house exaltation of the Ruler of the Ascendant as discovered in the Theory of Longevity has been used in constructing the Theory of Creation of Solar System. The basic principles of astrology are like axioms or postulates. The Theory of Creation of Solar System shows that the origin of these basic principles lies in the process of Creation of Solar System.
